O setor terciário consolidou-se como um dos principais motores do desenvolvimento econômico e urbano, impulsionado por transformações tecnológicas, reestruturação produtiva e novas dinâmicas do mercado global. Neste contexto, esta pesquisa investiga a relação entre o setor terciário e a organização do espaço urbano de Ituiutaba (MG), situado na região oeste do estado de Minas Gerais, cuja trajetória socioeconômica é historicamente ligada à agropecuária, mas que atualmente tem nas atividades do setor terciário o motor da dinâmica econômica local e regional. Buscou-se compreender a importância do setor terciário no contexto econômico nacional e local, analisando a influência das atividades econômicas na configuração espacial e no desenvolvimento urbano. A investigação considerou aspectos históricos, socioeconômicos e espaciais, que evidenciaram a relevância do setor terciário para o desenvolvimento de Ituiutaba. A abordagem metodológica incluiu levantamento bibliográfico, coleta e tratamento de dados secundários, além do mapeamento das atividades econômicas, que permitiu identificar padrões de concentração espacial. A análise da distribuição espacial das atividades econômicas revelou uma estrutura urbana predominantemente monocêntrica em Ituiutaba, com forte concentração econômica no Centro. Identificou-se a formação de eixos concentradores, que correspondem a vias com alta densidade de estabelecimentos comerciais e de serviços, com tendências de especialização, embora abriguem uma diversidade de atividades, atendendo às múltiplas demandas da população local. As atividades econômicas são fundamentais na organização e dinâmica das cidades, transformando ou reestruturando os espaços urbanos. Elas influenciam diretamente os padrões de ocupação do solo, a distribuição dos empregos e os fluxos populacionais, podendo reforçar a centralidade de áreas existentes ou favorecer a descentralização ao gerar novos polos econômicos.

The tertiary sector has become one of the main drivers of economic and urban development, driven by technological transformations, productive restructuring and new dynamics in the global market. In this context, this research investigates the relationship between the tertiary sector and the organization of the urban space of Ituiutaba (MG), located in the western region of the state of Minas Gerais, whose socio-economic trajectory is historically linked to agriculture and livestock farming, but which currently has tertiary sector activities as the engine of local and regional economic dynamics. The aim was to understand the importance of the tertiary sector in the national and local economic context, analyzing the influence of economic activities on spatial configuration and urban development. The research considered historical, socio-economic and spatial aspects, which highlighted the importance of the tertiary sector for the development of Ituiutaba. The methodological approach included a bibliographical survey, the collection and processing of secondary data, as well as the mapping of economic activities, which made it possible to identify patterns of spatial concentration. The analysis of the spatial distribution of economic activities revealed a predominantly monocentric urban structure in Ituiutaba, with a strong economic concentration in the city center. Furthermore, the formation of concentration axes was identified, which correspond to roads with a high density of commercial and service establishments, indicating a trend towards decentralization of economic activities. Considering that economic activities are fundamental to the organization and dynamics of cities, and are capable of transforming or restructuring urban spaces as they grow, transform or evolve, directly influencing land occupation patterns, job distribution and population flows, which can reinforce the centrality of existing areas or favor decentralization by generating new economic hubs.
